Pahlawan, an active Malayisan Lobby and Advocate Group, applauds Chinese newspaper Nanyang Siang Pau for providing a full account of its fund-raising and deployment activities in connection with the Save the Pig Farmers Campaign conducted during the Nipah Encephalitis Crisis. earlier this year.

Among the many organizations who raised funds on behalf of the pig farmers, Nanyang Siang Pau was the FIRST to begin the campaign and the FIRST to provide full accounting of the collection and disbursement activity of the campaign. (They were also the FIRST to carry the story in November 1998 alleging that JE is not the cause of deaths. See Viral Encephalitis Outbreak - Chronology of Events.)

The full report provided full details of the donors, amount of donation - ranging from hundreds of thousands to less than a dollar - were given equal mention in a 6 page full broadsheet announcement published on December 14, 1999. The report was audited by Ernst and Young, a certified public accountant and auditor.

Pahlawan wishes to congratulate the management and staff of Nanyang Siang Pau for their sense of responsibility and accountability and for doing such a fine job, we say "Syabas!"

"It is in such times that the media brings out its full support to the community; Nanyang Siang Pau has indeed walk its talk, its corporate slogan being, The voice of the people in the 21st century."

Pahlawan wishes to call upon all the other community groups, including political parties that have YET TO PROVIDE public accounting of their fund raising activities and disbursements to make a prompt report of their activities.
